Redhawk Retreat was everything we wanted and exactly as described by our very conscientious hosts. The quirky, rustic architecture was a perfect match for the quiet beauty of the rural Colorado setting. Close enough to town to get stocked up, but feels a million miles away from the city. A great escape that we will make again. Doug was always available and helpful. Highly recommend.

This house is warm and charming. Everything from the overly thick doors with custom handles to the open yet cozy floor plan was ideal for our purposes. We were able to go to Boulder, Denver, Black Hawk, Breckinridge and more relatively quickly and on interesting, scenic mountain roads all the way. Being near the tree line and situated on a plot of land spotted with small aspen groves and deer paths this cabin/chalet/home was great for animal spotting (rabbits, foxes, deer...). At night the spring winds whipped unimpeded from the mountain tops with a deep howl that makes you feel small. As soon as you walk inside the cabin however, all noise and cold is absent. The structure is solid and the heater and wood burning stove kept us so warm that at times we would open windows to cool down. We had five in our party and between the beds and couches we were able to comfortably vacation. Water pressure was great and it tasted great from the tap. We were told that Internet and tv were spotty at best but really had little to no problems. The conditions of the roads are great and one of the cars we took (a Honda Accord) handled all easily. Be weary of downhill speeds as the shear size of everything in the mountains affects perspectives and the little mountain towns likely benefit from speeders being ticketed; we got no tickets. Indian hot springs was awesome...sort of. The vapor caves are the way to go if that ends up being a destination otherwise you're just in hot tubs outside. At black hawk we went to a casino to gamble slots for no more than 10 minutes. After four minutes and $3.00 I had won about $150. Douglas was great and quite communicative. He was concerned with us having a good time and using the amenities provided. He gave suggestions for where we could go and what we could do. Any time I texted him The response was almost immediate and my questions were fully answered. Because of douglas's professionalism and warm welcoming I will be a repeat visitor. This trip was just the fellas but the next time will be the wife and I.

Look no further! This house is amazing. We had a wonderful weekend here enjoying the mountain views, close enough to drive to Breck for the day but far enough to feel cozy in nature at night. Spacious, beautiful, and fabulous. Bring board games and food and don't plan anything, you'll want to hang out here.

We had a wonderful time in FairPlay, it's really an interesting/fun time. The house itself is very unique and cozy. We loved it!We were also surprised that the town of FairPlay is based off of the TV show South Park. So you see all these South Park related things. Cool! Douglas was very helpful and accommodating. He had everything you needed from spices, pots, restroom essentials, and etc.. Only thing is service is bad around there and wifi was down this weekend. Regardless, Douglas tried his best to fix it but couldn't and we are thankful for that. One of our friends got hurt snowboarding, Douglas blessed us with a late check in. Highly recommended for everyone to stay here! Thank you!

Redhawk is a truly beautiful space. The completely circular structure has tons of windows and this winter, tons of snow. The 2 bedrooms were very nice with warm blankets. We had plenty of towels, and the shower has an excellent shower head. We had a lot of fun on the land, there was tons of snow (up to our knees) and our dog was the happiest going exploring and having tons of options on the wrap around patio. We'll definitely want to come back. Cooking was super easy with tons of pots and pans. The view was incredible. Super awesome overall.
January 2016
This cabin was a lot more than what we expected! Fully equiped with pots and pans if your planning on cooking like we did, and everything like warm towels and shampoo and coffee to make you fell at home. Gorgeous views amazing fireplace and an even better host, Doug was very responsive and helpful with all our questions.
January 2016
We loved, loved, loved our stay at Doug's place. The custom house is spectacular - the photos don't really do the place justice. We used the cabin as a base for skiing Breck. The drive to the mountain was easy and we enjoyed coming home and cozying up near the wood burning stove. Doug was a great host and totally easy to deal with. We're hoping to stay at Redhawk again in the near future.

We absolutely loved our stay at Redhawk. Doug was extremely helpful and available to answer our questions. The house is HUGE, much bigger than it looks in the pictures. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc. but there is not a full oven, just a small toaster / convection oven. The fireplace was wonderful! We live in Boulder so we were familiar with the area, but we had never been to Fairplay. The local grocery store is well-stocked, the brewery is wonderful and the town is quite cute. Very small but a few nice little shops. Breckenridge is only about 40 minutes away and Keystone was a little over an hour (where we snowboarded). Definitely recommend!

Doug was very nice and available to help when I called multiple times for various reasons. Redhawk Retreat is one of the most neat houses we have ever seen! It felt really cozy and the decor has the flavor of Santa Fe. What a lovely, unique space. It was a perfect honeymoon retreat and very quiet. There was even a congratulatory bottle of Champagne chilling in the fridge for us, courtesy of our hosts. It snowed unexpectedly and our small, front wheel drive car was stuck pretty badly. Doug let us stay a few extra hours while we were awaiting the tow truck. I would recommend a 4WD car or truck in the winter.

Amazing experience. Cabin was clean, comfortable and as inspiring as the views of the mountains. A perfect mountain getaway.

Our second time staying here in the past few months and will definitely be coming back. We love it at Redhawk.
We loved our stay at Redhawk Retreat. What a beautiful and convenient location in South Park. We found several great hikes right nearby, but also enjoyed just being at the home enjoying all the amenities the house offered. We were so comfortable and happy spending time at the home. We even extended our stay! Doug was a generous and welcoming host, we will visit again!
Wonderful experience. Great communication. The cabin was more than well furnished. The location worked out well for our trip. We were able to do a little excision to Buena Vista to ride horses. A great stop on our big summer trip, but would be a wonderful hangout for several days.
Great cabin in a great part of the country. The pictures here show an idea of what the cabin is like but you have to see it in person to really understand how amazing it is. Douglas could not have been any more helpful. He was very quick to answer all questions despite not even being in the country. Check in/check out was super easy. Place was clean on arrival with plenty of towels, blankets and basic amenities. We will be back soon. Cant wait to see the view again from this property.
Redhawk Retreat is a beautiful, quirky place to stay in the beautiful, quirky town of Fairplay. The accommodations are comfortable and tasteful, with some rustic touches that really give it a homey feel and get you connected with the surroundings. Don't expect the kind of homogeneous familiarity that you would get from one of the thousands of seemingly identical ski condos available on AirBnb. This place is one of a kind, and we wouldn't trade the experience of staying there for all the decktop hot tubs in Colorado. Douglas was a great host that was very responsive and easy to communicate with. He went above and beyond to make sure we were prepared for the high altitude living during the week we were there. It's definitely an adjustment for flatlanders like us, but his advice enabled us to quickly acclimate ourselves and have a great trip. If you plan to visit Fairplay, be sure to get a burger with the locals at the Park Bar, grab beer at the South Park Brewery (currently the highest brewery in North America), and visit the South Park City museum and some of the unique shops and galleries in "downtown" Fairplay. A visit to the nearby, hippie-run town of Alma is also a can't miss, as are the numerous hiking trails nearby. Overall, this is one of the most unique experiences we have had on AirBnb, and if you want to visit Colorado and get off the beaten path, this is a great place to do it.
Doug and Liz were very kind and responded quickly to our messages. The cabin was above and beyond what we expected. The photos capture the creative charm and the rural landscape...but once you are there it is even more magical. We really appreciate all of the artistic details and unique features of the cabin. We didn't realize how large the place was. Knowing there were two bedrooms before arriving, we still didn't anticipate the space. The two of us and our two dogs didn't even really need to be in the lower level at all. It's secluded with a great view and just a short trip into Fairplay for groceries if you need them. We enjoyed reading the guest book and picturing all of the other happy families who have spent time in your peaceful spot. We took a very quick trip to Breckinridge and were surprised how close the two were in distance. We look forward to going back with friends. Thank you so much Doug and Liz! Much appreciated, Mandy and Kyle.
Redhawk Retreat is a very nice place. It is quite spacious and a great value for those wishing for a peaceful, private getaway. Douglas is welcoming and quick to respond with questions. We were surprised that we had to wait about a half hour after the agreed upon check-in time of 3:00, for cleaning to be completed. But, he was accomodating enough with letting us load our groceries into the refrigerator as the place underwent final preparations. The Retreat is very unique and hand crafted in a nice setting with a few neighbors a few hundred yards away. It is slightly outside the small town of Fairplay, which has a nice little number of charming shops, and a pretty good grocery that we found plenty adequate for restocking. The king size bed upstairs is wonderful; the creaky, small, somewhat saggy antique metal full-size bed in the basement and the very firm futon less so. (Two of us didn't sleep so comfortably.) Otherwise, we enjoyed relaxing during our 5-night summertime stay, with the windows open, hearing the quaking aspens outside. The kitchen and outdoor charcoal grill was plenty accommodating. We appreciated the character of the timber and stone construction, as well as the very nice furnishings. It made for a good home base for our family of 4 for whitewater rafting (Kody is great!) and a long road trip to the Rocky Mtn. National Park, and through Estes Park. Breck is a short scenic drive, as is the drive along 285 from Denver to the rental. We would highly recommend spacious Redwood Retreat, even more so with better beds in the secondary bedrooms, which would really add appeal for small families.
Doug's cabin was great and so is Fairplay. Plenty of room, nice big kitchen, and both the propane heater downstairs and the iron stove upstairs warm the place up nicely (yes, even in July. It gets nippy at 10,000 feet at night!) Doug's place does have internet but it's satellite (as most of these mountain places are). It works fine for most things but you may want to augment it will a cell/4G connection depending on what you're doing. We had good luck with AT&T and I think Doug said Verizon works well also. Forget about T-Mobile in Fairplay. :-) You don't need a 4 wheel drive vehicle, but it'll sure help you get the most out of your visit. Doug's place has very easy access to the national forest and if you follow the signs to (Sherman? - I can't quite remember the name) you can drive into the forest, take the first left and you'll come out at the base of the mountain road that you can drive to the top. Up there you can walk around an old mining camp and there's snow to play in. Yes snow, in July and August. It's awesome, but you'll definitely want a 4x4 to take it on. Final note - the market in Fairplay is better than advertised. We were able to get most things we needed there.
This cabin is a unique place, and we had a great time there. The cabin is more than adequate for two people, and the upper level suite-style is very comfortable. The location is very private and not readily visible from the road, which itself didn't get much traffic that we noticed. The cabin was well stocked with cooking basics when we stayed, and everything was clean. We will gladly come back if the opportunity presents itself. Thanks Doug!
Comfortable, cozy and beautifully located cabin in a stunning area. Friendly hosts. Welcoming and warm vibe.
This house is INCREDIBLE! It is beautiful and so unique as a dome shape. I have never seen a house so unique. It is on private land so it is an extremely relaxing setting. Doug went out of his way to answer our questions and make us feel welcome! He event went out of his way to allow us to sleep in and have a late check out. One of the top Airbnb's I've stayed at.
Douglas was immediate in his responses when I asked questions. The home is very unique and charming. Not your usual home to stay in that's for sure. The pictures are accurate. The bed was comfortable and the area was quiet. We had some issues with tree branches blocking the satellite dish so we had to watch recorded DVR's prior guests had ordered. Not a big deal to us but thought I should mention. The home was clean and organized. Just to mention what Doug said, you will be at 10,000 feet and you must drink a bunch of water and no exertion for first couple of days. I had some mild affects but was able to get over it.
Doug's place is absolutely fantastic. Myself and all of our guests were very impressed by the little details that make the home so warm and friendly. It feels remote, but has so many mountain comforts. A beautiful kitchen for morning coffee and lively dinners. Comfortable and spacious rooms, everything you really need for a weekend or a week away. The setting is gorgeous, we most enjoyed sitting out on the patio and talking about the day while enjoying a sunset behind the mountains. I would absolutely recommend staying here to guests of all ages. All of my interactions with Doug were prompt and friendly, everything I was hoping for and much more.
