Kurt Weill Songs with Gloria Cheng, pianist; Pacific Symphony (2010)
I won't presume to teach anyone how to dress. But I do have some insight into vocal production and tone. I enjoy working with students of all levels. Detailing a performance or conveying the physics that support singing is equal to me. Tone without intent is lovely, but ultimately, boring.
Performance without fundamental technique is short-lived. I trained for my performing and teaching career with some of the best of the previous generations. I learned and adapted what I mastered to my own career's needs. Opera, musical theater and voice for the stage. It's all the same.
Now, I have brought these years of experience to the business community. Specifically, the International Business community. The key to business is communication. And the primary tool for International Business communication is English. For this purpose, I have reviewed and adapted every skill and technique I have mastered in the course of a thirty-year career as performer, mentor and professor.
Since 2020, I am pleased to now offer Personal Performance Coaching. My clients have included executives and professionals from across the globe who wish to develop their presentation and conversation skills. These are masters of their craft who realize there is a higher level of communication. And it is their nature to pursue it.
I am here to help.
My mentors include: Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, Gerard Souzay, Norman Gulbrandsen, William Shriner, Lorraine Nubar and my first and current teacher, Paul Kittle. Working with pianists, I learned more about the voice, viewed from the piano bench: Leonard Hokanson, Dalton Baldwin, John Wustman, Menahem Pressler, György Sebök, Martin Isepp and Harold Brown. Each gave me something to add to my mastery of the craft; Interpretation, inspiration or technical understanding came from them. I studied vocal pedagogy under Barbara Doscher. She, along with Paul Kittle, studied under Burton Coffin at the University of Colorado. My degrees and certificates come from formal studies at Indiana University, Northwestern University and The Banff Centre.

"Douglas gave me such a captivating, inspiring and thought-provoking class! The best ever I had to date. I will always remember this class - it will empower me with the courage to take the 'less travelled road' and make all the difference." - Executive (China) O melhor professor de inglês que eu já tive!!!! [The best English teacher I've ever had!!!!] - Sales Manager (Brazil) The greatest class I have ever had, Douglas is a perfect teacher. He patiently taught me how to do the rhythm in English to make my sounds like more native rather than simply focus on some words and grammar. Can’t wait to see him again. - Engineering student (China) Definitely one of the best classes I've had at EF. I will definitely schedule more classes with this teacher. He really teaches real English. - Engineering Team Manager (Brazil) Thank you so much for your suggestion,I think that will be very helpful. Describe events in English and remember that ADJs are a flavor of language. Hope we can have more classes in the future. - Office Manager (China) 説明がとても分かりやすく、教え方も面白いのでアッというまのレッスンでした。[The explanation was very easy to understand and the teaching method was interesting, so it was a quick lesson.] - Executive (Japan) Great teacher and very patient and didactic. - Executive (France) |
